H-E-B is on track this summer to become Austin’s first grocery store and its largest retailer to use solar power.
Workers from Meridian Solar have started installing rooftop panels on the company’s store at 6900 Brodie Lane in a pilot program that, if successful, could be expanded to other stores, H-E-B spokeswoman Leslie Lockett said.
The project includes a 2,500-sf solar array on the building’s roof, due to be completed next month. The project will cost about $195,000.
The Brodie Lane store already has several environmentally friendly features, including a rainwater-collection system.
In Austin, 68 other commercial businesses have taken advantage of Austin Energy’s solar rebate program, said Austin Energy spokeswoman Leslie Schneiweiss.
For commercial installations such as H-E-B’s — which will participate in the rebate program — the rebate amount is 80 percent of the invoiced cost or a maximum of $100,000, whichever is less.

The Energy Conservation Audit and Disclosure (ECAD) ordinance requires non-exempt homes in Austin receiving electricity from Austin Energy to have an energy audit before being sold. Homeowners are required to provide the ECAD to any potential home buyers.
An energy audit is used only to pin-point how you can increase energy efficiency and reduce your energy bills. The audit targets areas that are the most common sources of energy loss, energy penetration, and that offer the highest return on investment (ROI). The purpose of the audit is not to “scare” the buyer and/or seller into making costly upgrades or concessions, or to hinder a transaction. Rather, the energy audit is used to show you available rebate programs and suggested improvements to maximize your energy efficiency.
To ensure you’ll have a smooth transaction, come learn first hand
ØWhich homes are exempt?
ØHow much does the audit cost?
ØHow do I find a certified ECAD auditor?
ØWhat is included in the audit?

Sherman Williams is continually looking to develop new products and procedures within their organization to reduce the impact they have on nature. They’ve pioneered the use of environmentally-preferable solutions in their business practices and are putting those green ideas to work.
- Use sustainable raw materials, like soy and sunflower oil in paints.
- Reduced the amount of solvent in the formulations, so the vapors being emitted into the atmosphere are more environmentally friendly.
- New techniques in the manufacturing processes have helped produce less waste and have implemented energy efficient methods in the plants.
- Streamlined national distribution processes, helping to conserve fuel, energy and other natural resources.
- Formulated many of the coatings to clean easily and to resist mildew and harmful bacteria improving the indoor and outdoor environments.

We are proud to announce Cow Wow at this year’s Green Expo on July 25th! Here is what the people at Cow Wow have to say about The Poop Loop TM:
As a society, we are used to throwing away nutrients into underground sewage systems. These nutrients that we casually discard end up polluting underground water tables. Then, we buy manufactured chemical “nutrients” for our plants, which simply aren’t as good as what we threw away in the first place. Cow Wow replaces this wasteful circuit with a completely sustainable cycle which we call The Poop Loop TM.

When planning your home’s landscape, it is important to select the right tree for the right place. Because different trees have different mature heights, plan carefully where you plant each tree. Planting the right tree in the right place will enhance your property value and prevent costly trimming and damage to your home in the future.
Good landscaping also utilizes shrubs and low-growing trees that are compatible with electric utility lines. Low-growing trees will not normally reach electric utility lines, and therefore will help prevent power interruptions to you and your neighbors.
To learn more about planting the right tree in the right location, please read ONCOR’s Know Before You Grow (.pdf) brochure. In it, you will find a list of trees that are compatible around power lines and information regarding where and when to plant trees around your home.
ONCOR’s comprehensive landscaping brocure, Plan Before You Plant, is also available.
Be sure to visit ONCOR’s (MEC), Mobile Electricity Center at Green Expo 2009 to learn ways to save on your electricity bill.
