About Williamson County

Williamson County (affectionately referred to as "Wilco") is a located on the Edwards Plateau immediately to the North of Travis County. WilCo is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The population as of July 2009, is estimated to be around 410,000 (1.6% the entire state of Texas.) The population has increased 57.7% from the 2000 figure. The majority of Williamson County lies to the east of the Balcones Balcones Fault an area which is made up of black clay and sedimentary fertile soils. Much of this area is used for agriculture and for raising cattle. West of the Escarpment is the beginning of the Texas Hill Country characterized by rugged hills that consist of thin layers of soil lying on top of limestone. IH-35 runs along the fault line dividing the two distinct regions. Williamson County includes the following cities: Austin, Bartlett, Cedar Par, Florence, Georgetown, Granger, Hutt , Jarrell, Leander, Liberty Hill, Round Rock, Taylor, Thorndale, Thrall, and Weir.
