Governmental Affairs Committee

It is the mission of Governmental Affairs to identify, analyze and recommend association policies and issues on local, state and national political issues as well as identify candidates who embrace legislation to protect private property rights and the real estate industry.

At the association, we are the REALTOR® Party: an energized movement of real estate professionals fighting to keep the dream of homeownership alive.  Now more than ever, it is critical for Texas REALTORS® to come together and speak with one voice about the stability a sound and dynamic real estate market brings to our great state and nation.

WCAOR actively participates in the election process by holding candidate interviews and making recommendations to the Board of Directors and also to TAR.  The committee will also recommend funding to specific candidates once it has been determined by the Board of Directors that the candidate is “REALTOR” friendly.  This committee may also initiate call to actions and helps promote getting out the vote and promoting voter registration.

A couple Texas Landmark Achievements:

2009 – Transfer Tax

Defeated multiple proposals to tax real estate, including several bills requiring the creation of a tax on every deed recorded by the county clerk.

2009 – Property Appraisals

The most significant appraisal reform since 1979, provide additional oversight, uniform standards, and helps to slow down the pace of increasing property appraisals.

2007 – Tax on Personal Autos

Exempts personal vehicles that are also used for business purposes for the production of income from the required rendition for ad valorem tax purposes.
